KANNUR BEACH

Day 01: Kannur

Arrive at Kannur airport / Railway station, The Travel Planners representative will meet and thereafter drive to Hotel. Check in to the hotel and afternoon visit St.Angelo Fort and Payyambalam Beach / Thalassery fort and Dharmadam beach.

St. Angelo Fort

St. Angelos Fort is a popular and frequently visited destination in Kannur. It stands on the shores of the Arabian Sea overlooking the enthralling natural harbour, Mapilla Bay. Built by Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, the fort has an intriguing history. Many dynasties have gone through bitter battles in the quest to conquer it.

In 1663, the Dutch captured the fort and sold it to the Ali Raja of the Arakkal dynasty. Later in 1790, the British conquered it and used it as their army centre in the Malabar region. Currently, the fort is under the Central Archaeology Department. Walking around the majestic fort, one can find the tombstones of the soldiers who lost their lives in the battles, barracks as well as an old chapel. You can also check out Kannur’s first-ever lighthouse standing next to the fort.

Payyambalam beach

The impeccably maintained Payyambalam beach is highly sought after by tourists and travellers seeking a secluded location to just relax or enjoy a family picnic in tranquillity. The golden sand and foamy waves of the Arabian Sea form a picturesque setting to unwind and revitalise yourself after long and hectic work schedules. Activities like surfing and swimming are also available for visitors. You can reach the beach through a small crossover bridge built over a narrow canal.

Thalassery Fort

The Thalassery Fort is an ancient historical monument that was built by the East India Company in 1703. The major reason behind its establishment was to signify the might and power of the imperial rulers. The fort played a significant role in supporting the military and commercial activities of the British during their colonial rule in India. The enormous laterite walls, artistically carved doors, and the secret tunnels of the Thalassery Fort leading to the sea make it quite appealing to explore. The Archaeological Survey of India is now supervising the fort. You can book your stay at any of the Thalassery beach resorts and explore the place more.

Dharmadam beach

The Dharmadam beach is a popular beach located in the vibrant city of Kannur. The palm- fringed golden shoreline and peaceful waves make it the perfect place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city life. The name, “Dharmadam” meaning “place of ethics”, was given by Buddhist monks who frequently visited the place for its aura of peace and rare medicinal herbs.

Stay overnight in Hotel.

POOKODE LAKE

Day 02: Wayanad

After breakfast drive to Wayanad. An amazing journey through the Ghat pass road and you could stop at Lakkidi view point and enjoy the beautiful view of the serpentine roads through the hills.

It is often referred to as the ‘Gateway of Wayanad’ and is one of the best tourist destinations that you can visit during this trip. The view is the best during the early mornings or evenings.

A major attraction in the Lakkidi View Point is a Ficus tree with a large chain around it. It is believed that the tree holds the soul of a young man named Karinthandan, who guided a British engineer through the Wayanad forests and was later killed by him.

Upon arrival check in at your hotel. Afternoon visit Pookode Lake (Boating - Optional) and Banasura Sagar Dam- the largest earth dam in India and the second largest of its kind in Asia.

Pookode Lake

Pookode Lake is one of the most important attractions among Wayanad tourist places. It is a natural freshwater lake located between the lush green forests of Wayanad and the Western Ghats. The gorgeous lake spreads over 13 acres and is 40 metres deep. Moreover, the thick bushes and tall trees lining the pathway around the lake make it even more beautiful. Every individual taking a tour to the idyllic Pookode Lake is bewitched by the calm ambience, breath-taking beauty, and lush greenery all around.

It is also the starting point of the Panamaran rivulet, one of the primary tributaries of the Kabini river. Apart from this, you can visit the nearby freshwater aquarium, a children's park, and shopping centres that display a variety of handiwork and spices. The lake is under the supervision of the South Wayanad forest division.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Situated in Kalpetta, the Banasura Sagar Dam is one of the frequently visited tourist Wayanad tourist places in Northern Kerala. The dam gets its name from ‘Banasura’, who was the son of King Mahabali of Kerala. According to legends, Banasura did extreme penance on the top of the hills. The dam was built in 1979 to support the Kakkayam Hydroelectric power project, which aimed at meeting the drinking water and irrigation requirements of the nearby areas during summer.

There is a set of islands in the dam’s reservoir as well that attracts tourists towards this destination. At the Banasura Sagar dam, you can go for boating or trek into the forests of Banasura peak. Other than this, you can lazily walk through nature and enjoy the pristine beauty of the place. To maintain eco-tourism, the authorities do not allow to party or plan a picnic.

Edakkal Caves

The name ‘Edakkal’ translates into ‘a stone in between’. Lying at 1200 metres above the sea level on Ambukuthi Mala, the Edakkal Caves are formed from fissures split away from the main rock bodies.

There are many stories associated with the formation of these caves. It is believed that the caves were formed from the arrows fired by Lava and Kusha, sons of Lord Sri Rama. Another legend is related to the Goddess Mudiampilly. The caves hold historical importance as well. The paintings found in the cave are believed to date at least 6,000 BC, and the carvings are from the Neolithic and Mesolithic age. The Edakkal Caves are the only place in India known to have stone age carvings.
